Technology in Education – Walk and Talk

Episode 8 Diigo – Social Bookmarking & Annotation

with one comment

Show Notes: Diigo is a Social Bookmarking service with similar capabilities to its more well known counterpart, Delicious. However, Diigo also has Social Annotation functions, which raises its status to one of the most useful tools for education; learning and research. This function allows discussions to take place in situ at the relevant point of the original material.

I’ve previously written about the educational implications of Social Bookmarking, but need to do some more work on the subject.

Episode 7 Photos & Streaming Video from Phones

Show Notes: We’re all pretty much carrying carmeras around with us constantly now, possibly on our phones. I’d advise taking as many pictures as you can – it’s a quick and easy way of creating content and developing a library of supporting images to illustrate your points.

Potentially the main innovation with cameras on phones is now the ability to stream video live. It might not be the best quality, but it serves a purpose. Two services that I use are Qik and Flixwagon. I was an alpha tester for Qik and that software is now being shipped on all new Nokia models. It mean that content can be quickly online. (I’m experimenting with squirting live video out to a blog at the moment.)

Searching video might be difficult at the moment, but it’s going to get a lot easier as this from Adobe(TM) shows.

Show Notes: Apologies for the wind noise on this episode.

What kind of media should your camcorder store to? SD or Hard drive? Also is the Flip a useful alternative?

I cover my views on these questions.

Show Notes: Choosing what camcorder to use for filming – well I want it to be easy to use, cheap and high quality output.

I use an older (first generation High Def) Panasonic saving to SD cards. Mine has 3 CCD sensors, a lot of newer camcorders or cheaper HD camcorders use CMOS sensors, which personally I don’t think are as good.

Episode 4 YouTube tips

Show Notes: Start out the episode talking about my initial ponderings on what to call the show, before I decided on WalkTalkTech.

Although YouTube is probably the best know video hosting site, I’ve noticed that when people are embedding videos onto other sites (blog posts, etc.) that they are tending to leave the default settings. This leads to “related videos” being displayed when your video has finished playing. These videos might not actually meet your expectations of related videos. Perhaps people don’t generally know how to alter the settings.

Click on the cog icon at the end of the embed window to access the “Customise” options. Uncheck the “Include related videos” option. (I’ve checked the “Play in HD” option.) Choose your border colours if you want a border and click “Show border”, and then choose the size you want the video displayed. Select the Embed code and use that in your site.

[Some settings might not work with WordPress.com]

Deep Link Start Time Marker

Instead of making your viewers watch an entire video you link to in YouTube, you might want to link to a specific point to start watching. This is possible by putting a time marker on the end of video link URL. This is called a deep link and takes the format #t=1m15s

Example: If I want to take you to a specific point in Episode 3 I can use the link:

Show notes: Following my philosophy, I’ve got links to videos (screencasts) by others covering setting for the software. Also links to the sites are provided in my Diigo shared bookmarks.

Show Notes: I’ve previously written about Screencasting on the Cheap. Are these free options easy to use? Well I thinks, and the place to find out how to use them – watch the vid to hear what I think.

Episode 1 – What it’s all about

Show Notes: I’m interested in the use of technology for educational use. Getting ideas down is difficult time-wise. So I’m going to make notes on video as i walk to and from work and post them up. Videos will only run for 1.5 to 3 minutes in length.
